----------------- (2nd LD) 3 dead, 3 missing in sinking of S. Korean fishing boat off New Zealand SEOUL -- A South Korean fishing boat sank in waters off New Zealand early Wednesday, leaving three Indonesian crew members dead and three others, including one South Korean, missing, an official said.
The 1,599-ton Oyang 70 was carrying 51 crew members, including eight South Koreans, when it went down some 400 miles off the southern New Zealand city of Dunedin around 2:30 a.m. (Korean time). Forty-five people were rescued alive by nearby fishing boats, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
----------------- Deforestation reveals N. Korea's long-range artillery tubes near border SEOUL -- Years of deforestation in North Korea have helped the South Korean military detect new locations of the North's long-range artillery tubes that were initially covered by trees near their tense border, a military source said Wednesday.
North Korea is believed to have deployed hundreds of long-range artillery and multiple-launch rockets that can strike the South Korean capital of Seoul, which lies only about 50 kilometers from their border, posing the most serious concern for the South.
----------------- (LEAD) N. Korean helicopter crashes in China, killing pilot: source SHENYANG, China -- A North Korean helicopter crashed in a Chinese border area, killing the pilot aboard who may have attempted to defect to Russia, intelligence sources here said Wednesday.
The crash took place in Fushun Prefecture in the province of Liaoning Tuesday afternoon, the sources said, adding the pilot was the only person in the chopper when it crashed.
----------------- S. Korea's income gap narrowing on economic recovery: minister SEOUL -- The economic recovery in South Korea is trickling down to low-income people, helping narrow the income gap between the rich and poor, the finance minister said Wednesday.
Speaking to a weekly meeting of economic ministers, however, Yoon Jeung-hyun urged the government to focus more on helping the group.
----------------- S. Korea's population to begin shrinking from 2018: report SEOUL -- South Korea's population is expected to start declining from 2018 while an influx of non-Korean spouses is forecast to make the country once promoted as homogeneous more multiracial, a report showed Wednesday.
The country's population has grown a mere 0.3 percent annually between 2005-2010 and the growth rate is predicted to turn negative from 2018, according to the report on 2009 demographics by the Korea Social Science Data Archive.
----------------- Growth of foreign land ownership in S. Korea slows down in H1 SEOUL -- Foreign land ownership in South Korea rose in the first half of the year but the growth rate slowed down amid a prolonged slump in the real estate market, the government said Wednesday.
The size of land owned by foreign nationals and companies increased 1.3 percent on-year to 221.24 million square meters as of the end of June, according to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
----------------- (LEAD) Grandson of Samsung Group founder found dead SEOUL -- A grandson of Samsung Group founder Lee Byung-chul was found dead in Seoul early Wednesday, police said.
The body of Lee Jae-chan, 46, was discovered in his apartment parking lot at around 7 a.m., police said. Investigators said they suspect Lee committed suicide by jumping from his apartment. No suicide note has been found yet.
