Samsung Electronics laptop battery melts down, causes fire
By Kim Deok-hyun SEOUL, Feb. 24 (Yonhap) -- A battery inside a laptop computer manufacturered by Samsung Electronics Co. melted down Sunday, causing a fire that partly blackened a home in Seoul, fire officials said.
A 34-year-old woman, whose name was withheld, told fire officials that her Samsung Electronics Sens P10 model caught fire after a battery inside in it melted down all of a sudden.
She said the floor of her room and bedclothes were partly blackened. No one was injured.
A Samsung Electronics Co. official confirmed the accident, saying that it might be caused by overheating, because the laptop computer was used for a long time on a pillow, which apparently blocked ventilation of the machine. "Since the woman used the computer on a pillow for hours, it could block a ventilating hole below the model," said the company official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The battery that melted down was made by either Samsung SDI Co. of South Korea or Toshiba Corp. of Japan, he said.
It was the latest in a recent series of notebook battery explosions or meltdowns reported in South Korea.
Last week, LG Electronics Inc. said it has stopped sales of a notebook computer model after a consumer reported the model's battery melted down. In January, another LG laptop owned by a journalist exploded.
No injuries were reported in both accidents.
