S. Korean, Chinese inspectors probe shrimp snack factories

SEOUL, April 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's food and drug agency said Tuesday that it conducted an on-site inspection with its Chinese counterparts at two factories that may have made a bag of snack food that allegedly contained the head of a mouse.

The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said that its experts reviewed a production facility in Qingdao, China, while Chinese government officials inspected a factory in Busan.

"The visits to Qingdao by local experts and the probe of the Busan factory by Chinese inspectors were arranged during bilateral talks between food safety authorities and are designed to better determine where the alien part got into the snack," a government official said.

Both factories are owned by Nongshim, the nation's largest processed food manufacturer. The snack that may have contained the head of the rodent was "Saewookkang," a shrimp-flavored snack that is one of the oldest and most popular snacks in South Korea. The Chinese factory makes basic materials that go into the snack, with final processing and packaging taking place at the Busan factory in South Korea.

The discovery caused a public uproar and raised concerns about food processing oversight regulations that can directly affect public health.
