S. Korea food imports decline 14.5 pct in 2009
SEOUL, Sept. 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's food imports declined 14.5 percent on-year to US$8.43 billion in 2009, a government report said Tuesday.

The report by the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said imports of edible oil products reached $948 million, making them the single largest import item, followed by wheat and corn.

South Korea imported $488 million worth of wheat and $348 million worth of corn in the cited one-year period.

The KFDA also said that organic food imports totaled $40 million due to growing public interest in health. Most organic food imports centered on brown sugar, bananas and certain types of processed food.

By country, imports from China reached $1.86 billion, or 22.1 percent, of all food brought into the country in the one-year period, followed by $1.79 billion from the United States and $767 million from Australia.
