SEOUL, Sept. 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's CJ Group said Friday it has made U.S. business magazine Fortune's 2017 list of the world's top 50 companies in terms of positive impact on society.

The food and entertainment conglomerate ranked 38th on the Change the World list, becoming the first and sole South Korean company chosen. Only seven Asian firms have made this year's list.

Leading global financial services firm JPMorgan Chase & Co. topped the list, followed by DSM Food Specialties, Apple Inc. and Pharmaceutical giant Novartis.

Fortune's Change the World list recognizes companies that have had a positive social impact through activities that are part of their core business strategy. It evaluates and ranks the companies by three factors: social impact, business results and degree of innovation.

CJ said it has been chosen for its efforts to create quality jobs for senior citizens and thus solve the issue of poverty among the elderly through its logistics arm.

CJ Group has offered those who are cast out of the workforce a way back in by allowing them to deliver its packages, Fortune said, adding that under CJ Logistics it has trained older people to be delivery agents across the country's provinces.

"Over 1,000 jobs have been created, and the average monthly income is 180 percent higher than that offered in part-time public-sector jobs for seniors. CJ aims to expand this model to those with disabilities and low-income populations," the magazine reported.

CJ Logistics hires seniors to serve as door-to-door delivery agents once packages are delivered to apartment complexes across the nation. The company began the service in the southeastern port of Busan in 2013 and currently operates some 140 hubs nationwide.
