SEOUL, May 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korea ranks the lowest among major economies in the development of blockchain technology, data showed Tuesday.

South Korea's capability and knowhow in blockchain technology is at 76.4 percent of the United States, considered a front-runner in the sector, according to the data by South Korea' state-run information and communications promotion agency.

The data showed that the technology gap between the two countries is about 2.4 years.

South Korea also trailed other major countries with its prowess in this sector being 96 percent that of Europe, 86.4 percent of Japan and 78.9 percent of China, it said.

The data was based on a survey conducted on 124 experts in the field.
