SEOUL, Nov. 8 (Yonhap) -- BGF Retail Co., the operator of South Korea's major convenience store chain, CU, said Thursday it has opened a new logistics center to boost the competitiveness of its retail service.

The 58,446-square-meter distribution center in Jincheon, some 90 kilometers south of Seoul, began a trial run Wednesday with a plan to begin full-fledged operations in the first quarter of next year, the company said.

BGF Retail said the new center, which also includes a production facility for instant meals, can handle 700,000 orders a day on average.

"The Jincheon distribution center will play a pivotal role in our group's step towards a global retail service group," BGF Group Chairman Hong Seok-joh said in a statement.
