Calendar featuring S. Korean actor becomes sellout in Japan
SEOUL, Nov. 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Gong Yoo has proven to be enjoying an explosion of popularity in Japan, after a 2008 calendar featuring himself sold like hot cakes, his management agency said on Tuesday.
According to the agency SidusHQ, originally 2,000 copies of the "2008 Gong Yoo Calendar" were expected to sell, but three times that amount were ordered by Japanese fans. More copies of the calendar are quickly being reprinted to meet the high demand.
"Since online sales were extremely popular, we plan to sell the calendar throughout Japan in stores offline," and "selling about 6,000 calendars is similar to how many A-grade South Korean 'hallyu' stars would sell," said Gong's management agency.
Hallyu refers to the growing popularity of South Korean pop culture in Japan and other Asian countries.
Due to the popularity of the calendars, the expected sales volume of Gong's photo collections, which will go on sale this December, was raised substantially.
The South Korean actor gained fame in Japan after starring in the 2005 South Korean drama "Hardtack Teacher and Star Candy" and in the 2007 Japanese movie "Like a Dragon." This summer, Japanese fans gathered at filming locations for the hit South Korean drama "Coffee Prince Shop No.1," while Gong filmed his lead role. SidusHQ expects that the Korean actor's popularity will rise sharply after TV Tokyo broadcasts "Coffee Prince Shop No.1" in Japan next year.
