S. Korea's An wins men's +105kg world weightlifting title
GOYANG, South Korea, Nov. 29 (Yonhap) -- An Yong-kwon of South Korea won the gold medal in the men's +105 kilogram competition at the World Weightlifting Championships that ended in South Korea on Sunday.
The 27-year-old lifted 247kg in the clean and jerk and 198kg in the snatch for a total of 445kg at the 2009 World Weightlifting Championships in Seoul's northern suburban city Goyang.
An was tied with Udachyn Artem of Ukraine who also lifted 445kg, but was declared the winner, because he weighed lighter than Artem. An weighed at 142.23kg and Artem 158.90kg.
Shymechko Ihor, also from Ukraine, placed third with a total 427kg in the same category.
"I'm overwhelmed by the gold medal," An told reporters, saying that the record was not his best to date. "I'll try to solidify my position by not being complacent and working up a notch higher."
On Saturday, Beijing Olympic gold medalist Jang Mi-ran of South Korea also broke her own world record in the women's +75kg category by triumphing in the clean and jerk.
