(LEAD) German magazine ranks Paik Nam-june among top contemporary artists

SEOUL, Dec. 30 (Yonhap) -- Paik Nam-june (1932-2006), a Korea-born American video artist, was selected among the world's top 10 deceased contemporary artists by Germany's Manager Magazin, the magazine's Web site said Wednesday.

The monthly business magazine ranked Paik 10th in the list that was topped by American pop artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) and followed by Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), Sol Le Witt (1928-2007) and Donald Judd (1928-1994).

Born in Seoul during the Japanese occupation of Korea, Paik was drawn to the field of electronic art after meeting John Cage and Joseph Beuys in Germany, and is considered to be the world's first video artist.

As the most noticeable living artists actively working since the 1970s, the German magazine selected Gerhard Richter along with Bruce Nauman and Sigmar Polke.
