SEOUL, Aug. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's box office hit "Snowpiercer" drew more than 3 million viewers in the first five days of its opening, its local distributor said Sunday.

The film, starring top Korean actor Song Kang-ho alongside Hollywood thespians Chris Evans, Ed Harris and Tilda Swinton, attracted an accumulated total of just over 3 million viewers as of 2:27 p.m. Sunday, according to CJ Entertainment.

It is the first time that a local movie has recorded such a high audience number in such a short period of time, with the exception of the action-comedy "Secretly Greatly," which broke the 3 million mark on the fifth day of its release in June, thanks in part to a national holiday.

The number of local cinemas showing "Snowpiercer" rose from 848 on its opening day Wednesday to 1,101 on Saturday.

Based on the French graphic novel "Le Transperceneige," the sci-fi action thriller depicts the inter-class struggles among the world's last-remaining inhabitants aboard a perpetually moving train.
