2017/11/02 18:15

SEOUL, Nov. 2 (Yonhap) -- The organizers of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics said Thursday they will soon announce the completion of venues for the competition.

PyeongChang's organizing committee said the official declaration will be made in a ceremony on Saturday at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium in PyeongChang, some 180 kilometers east of Seoul in Gangwon Province. It will host the opening and closing ceremonies for the first Winter Games to take place in South Korea.

Also on Saturday, the organizers will celebrate the completion of PyeongChang Olympic Stadium with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The construction of the 35,000-seat venue was finished on Sept. 30.

The ceremony will be attended by Yeo Hyung-koo, secretary-general of the organizing committee; Choi Moon-soon, governor of Gangwon Province; and Roh Tae-kang, vice sports minister.

A dozen venues will be used for the Feb. 9-25 Olympic Games. Six venues have been newly built, and six other existing venues will be refurbished for the Olympics.

The organizers said the 12 facilities have reached 99.56 percent completion, with a few having already hosted international competitions as Olympic test events.
