SEOUL, Feb. 7 (Yonhap) -- Artisan Kim Young-jun, known for elaborate mother-of-pearl lacquerware, is running a solo exhibition in Seoul and Gangneung to celebrate the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

The Seoul exhibition opened at Iljowon Art Gallery in Insadong on Monday, and his exhibition at Seongyojang in Gangneung, one of two sub-host cities for the Olympics, will open Thursday.

The artisan, 61, has been working to put a modern twist on Korean traditional mother-of-pearl lacquerware.

"To celebrate the Olympics, I've created craftworks where tradition meets modernity and the essence of 'art of light' can be presented," the artisan said in a statement. "I also hope to share Korean traditional beauty with the rest of the world."

The exhibition runs through Feb. 28 and 25 in Seoul and Gangneung, respectively.
