GANGNEUNG, South Korea, Feb. 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korean short track speed skater Lim Hyo-jun, who grabbed gold in the men's 1,500-meter race at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Wednesday, expressed gratitude to President Moon Jae-in for congratulating him on the victory.

"Thank you, dear president, for visiting the stadium despite your busy schedule, and for giving me words of encouragement," Lim said through his posting on Instagram.

After capturing gold in Saturday's competition, Moon said he was touched by the fact that Lim achieved the victory despite being injured seven times.

"I get shy when people talk about how I was injured seven times," Lim said. "That is because I know well that there are South Koreans who are doing things tougher than my training without complaint."

Lim added he thinks the gold medal was given to him to represent those people, claiming that he will also work harder in his position.

"As there are more competitions to go, I will not stop here. I will cooperate with my teammates to have the best race," Lim added.

The skater finished the race on Saturday with an Olympic record time of 2:10.485. It was the first medal to be won by Team Korea at the 2018 Winter Games and also the first in eight years to be collected by the male short track speed skating team.

On Tuesday, Lim also passed the preliminaries for the 1,000-meter race and the 5,000m relay.
