GANGNEUNG, South Korea, Feb. 14 (Yonhap) -- The souvenir shop located at Gangneung Olympic Park closed early after its ceiling was damaged due to strong winds.

Earlier in the day, Gangneung, the sub-host city of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, issued a weather alert due to strong winds striking the area.

As of 2:00 p.m., the wind speed reached 8.7 meters per second, making visitors at the park move quickly indoors.

The official gift shop at the park also closed after its ceiling was damaged. The building was vulnerable to harsh weather conditions as it's a temporary structure for the Games, made mainly of steel pipes and cloth.

The store official said operations will resume later in the day.

Organizers also made a special announcement to visitors, warning them to refrain from staying outdoors. Other signs also collapsed throughout the venue.
