(Olympics) Switzerland wins Group B in women's hockey tournament

GANGNEUNG, South Korea, Feb. 14 (Yonhap) -- Switzerland defeated Sweden 2-1 to take the top seed in Group B of the women's hockey tournament at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Wednesday.

Phoebe Staenz scored the go-ahead goal at 11:28 in the third period at Kwandong Hockey Centre in Gangneung to send Switzerland into the quarterfinals with a perfect record. Switzerland earlier defeated the joint Korean team 8-0 and then Japan 3-1.

After a scoreless first period, Alina Muller put the Swiss on the board with a power play goal at 13:51 in the second period. It was Muller's sixth goal of the tournament.

Anna Borgqvist tied the score for Sweden at 7:35 in the third, but Staenz's tip-in of a Christine Meier pass at the top of the crease clinched the win for Switzerland.

In the women's tournament, there are eight teams divided into two groups of four, based on 2016 world rankings.

Canada, the United States, Finland and Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) are in Group A. Canada and the U.S. have already clinched byes to the semifinals as the top two seeds, while Finland and OAR will move on to the quarterfinals.

Korea and Japan, the bottom two from Group B, have been relegated to the classification playoffs, where they will face the losers of the quarterfinals. Korea and Japan will meet in the final Group B contest later Wednesday.
