SEOUL, July 6 (Yonhap) -- Actor Jang Keun-suk will start his mandatory military service on July 16, his agency Tree J said Friday.

The actor, however, will do alternative service as a social office worker following his diagnosis of bipolar disorder in 2011, which classified him as ineligible for active duty in the military.

Since his first diagnosis in 2011, the 31-year-old actor has responded to every health examination request made by the Military Manpower Administration, the company said.

His health condition "is private information and we feel cautious to discuss his condition," it said, "But he has grown as an actor based on fans' support and love. We feel responsible to disclose the information clearly."

His agency continued, "The actor tried his best to overcome the disorder ... But we regret to tell you that he failed to get a satisfactory result."
