Honda says no plan to recall vehicles in S. Korea

SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Yonhap) -- The local unit of Honda Motor Co. said Thursday it won't recall vehicles in South Korea despite faulty airbags that led to a massive global recall.

Honda, Japan's No. 2 carmaker, is expanding its global recall to nearly 1 million vehicles due to defective airbags, the latest crisis to hit Japanese manufacturers following Toyota Motor Corp.'s massive recall that began in late January.

The broadening recall by Honda affects Accord sedans, Civic compact cars and CR-V crossover vehicles made between 2001 and 2002.

An official at Honda's Korean unit said the company has no plan to recall those vehicles in South Korea because they were imported by individuals.

"Those vehicles aren't subject to recall because they weren't officially imported by Honda Korea," said the official by telephone.

Instead, Honda Korea will fix the faulty airbags for free if owners request the repairs, the official said.

Officials from the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, which oversees car safety, said earlier that they have been in discussions with Honda Korea on whether to recall such vehicles.

Honda started selling its vehicles in South Korea from 2004.
