Hyundai Motor replaces head of U.S. plant after recall
SEOUL, March 9 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co. said Tuesday it has replaced the chief of its U.S. plant after recalling vehicles manufactured there, in what appeared to be a reprimand for the recall.
The replacement of the president of Hyundai's plant in Montgomery, Alabama came less than two weeks after the Korean automaker decided to recall about 1,300 Sonata sedans manufactured at the plant over a defect in front-door locks.
Shin Dong-kwan, a vice president of Hyundai's production and planning division, replaced Kim Hoi-il as the CEO of the Alabama factory, company officials said.
The replacement was made when Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo, known for his detail-oriented micromanagement style, visited the U.S. factory late last month, the officials said.
But an official at Hyundai downplayed the move, saying it was just part of a routine personnel shake-up.
The recall also affected 46,000 Sonatas produced at Hyundai's plant in South Korea.
Consumer interest in auto safety was heightened after Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. was forced to recall more than 8.5 million vehicles worldwide.
