SEOUL, March 29 (Yonhap) -- K-pop girl group GFriend will release its debut album in Japan in May, its label said Thursday.

The six-member group held a press conference and showcase at Alta Theater in Shinjuku, Tokyo, on Wednesday where it announced it will release the album May 23.

At the showcase, the group performed its hit songs, including "Rough," "Navillera" and the Japanese version of "Me Gustas Tu."

"We are so nervous and excited like when we made our debut (in Korea) three years ago. Now we've embarked on a new journey, we will try our best until we can hold a concert in a dome," the agency quoted the group as saying.

Last month, the group opened an official Japanese website and signed a contract with King Record Co., a major Japanese record company, to make inroads into the country.

Since its debut in 2015, GFriend has produced such hit songs as "Glass Bead," "Fingertip" and "Summer Rain."

Three years ago, Billboard named the group as one of the "Top 5 K-Pop Artists to Watch in 2015."

The girl band is currently on a tour in Asia titled "Season of GFRIEND" that started in Taiwan on Feb. 28. The next stops are Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.
