African Union chief condemns Taliban for kidnapping Korean aid workers

By Yoo Cheong-mo
SEOUL, Aug. 7 (Yonhap) -- African Union chairman Alpha Oumar Konare denounced the Taliban Tuesday for the kidnapping of South Korean aid workers and urged that the hostages be released before August 15, Korea's Liberation Day.

Konare put forward the demand during his courtesy call on President Roh Moo-hyun at the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae.

"The (kidnapped) South Koreans went to Afghanistan to help the poor people. The entire African countries condemn the Taliban captors," Konare said. "We African people deplore the killing of two Korean hostages. We wish the remaining hostages would return to their families at home before Korea's Aug. 15 Liberation Day."
In response, Roh thanked the AU chief for his deep concern about the hostages and their safety.
