Robbed rifle, ammo found in southern hinterland
JANGSEONG, South Korea, Dec. 12 (Yonhap) -- Police said Wednesday that they have found all the military weapons stolen a week ago in a vicious attack on two marines which left one dead and one seriously injured, a possible breakthrough in the ongoing hunt for the culprit.
A K-2 rifle, a hand grenade, and live ammunition were found dumped under a bridge near a highway in Jangseong, South Jeolla Province, police added.
Last Thursday, an unidentified man believed to be in his 30s drove a jeep into the back of the two marines outside their base on a tiny island west of Seoul. One of the marines was stabbed to death during an ensuing scuffle and the other was severely injured.
The assailant escaped with the weapons, placing the entire country on a high security alert ahead of the Dec. 19 presidential election.
Police and troops immediately launched a joint manhunt for the culprit but there had been no concrete clue to his whereabouts. Police have offered a 20 million won (US$22,000) reward for his capture.
