Data of 10 million people leaked on Internet: police

SEOUL, April 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korean police said Friday they are looking into a leak of personal information of some 10 million people from a major online auction site.

Internet Auction Co., whose shares are largely owned by the U.S. auction site Ebay Inc., was hacked from an overseas location in early February, resulting in the loss of residential and email addresses as well as resident registration numbers of about 60 percent of its users, the police said.

South Korea, one of the world's most densely wired countries with a population of 49 million, depends heavily on the Internet for personal trade and commerce, with Internet Auction leading the industry.

But police said credit information that could be used in purchasing goods was not targeted, adding the incident is unlikely to lead to substantial financial losses.
