Populists' pork: stopgap measures may leave lasting ill effects

It may be just a coincidence but the government has unveiled various measures to improve the public's livelihood in the wake of the biggest popular protests in two decades.

On Sunday, it announced a $10-billion energy tax refund for low-income people, followed by steps to perk up the transactions of unsold apartments, subsidies for business startups and cuts in telecom expenses. The Lee administration, in cooperation with the governing Grand National Party, will soon follow up with tuition cuts and pension increases for senior citizens.
