Police book over 100 for forging college diplomas, certificates
DAEJEON, Oct. 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korean police said Wednesday they booked over 100 people on charges of buying fake university diplomas and other certificates through a counterfeiter in China.
The forged documents range from scores on the Test of English for International Communication (TOIEC), used widely by employers and schools to rate English proficiency, to vocational certificates in cooking and computer skills, investigators said.
The forger, known only by his last name Jeong, is still at large, the police said.
The extent to which the fake documents have circulated throughout the country is not yet clear, but authorities said the scheme was discovered at an early stage.
The police booked 102 suspects who allegedly paid some 50,000 won (US$43) for each of the forged documents.
They received the certificates via e-mail from Jeong, who lives in China, and sent the money to a bank account in South Korea. Investigators said they have sought assistance from Interpol to track down Jeong.
South Korea's low unemployment rate coupled with the ongoing global economic crisis caused demand to spike for higher English test scores or diplomas from top universities among young job seekers.
