World weightlifting champion hospitalized after car accident

GOYANG, South Korea, Jan. 10 (Yonhap) -- Four-time world weightlifting champion Jang Mi-ran of South Korea has been hospitalized after sustaining a slight injury in a car accident on Saturday, police said Sunday.

Jang's Volkswagen sedan was hit by a sports utility vehicle from behind at 8 p.m. on a road in front of a shopping mall in Goyang, on the northern outskirts of Seoul, police said, adding she was sent to a nearby hospital for a medical check-up.

The SUV whose driver was not identified apparently skidded on a snow-covered road and crashed into Jang's car, they said.

The 26-year-old Beijing Olympic gold medalist won her fourth straight world championship title with a new world record at the 2009 World Weightlifting Championships held in Goyang in November.
