China extends invitation to North Korean leader

SEOUL, Feb. 9 (Yonhap) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has invited North Korean leader Kim Jong-il to the neighboring communist ally, China's Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday.

The invitation was made in a letter from Hu delivered to Kim by Wang Jiarui, head of the international department of the Communist Party of China, Xinhua said.

Wang has been on a trip to Pyongyang since Saturday.

China is North Korea's last remaining major ally and key aid provider.

The two countries marked the 60th anniversary of relations last year.
