(LEAD) Minor quake jolts Seoul metropolitan area

SEOUL, Feb. 9 (Yonhap) -- An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred on the southwest outskirts of Seoul Tuesday evening, the Korea Meteorological Administration said.

The quake hit an area about 8 kilometers north of Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, at 6:08 p.m., the administration said, adding no casualties or property damage were reported.

This is the seventh quake to hit South Korea this year, the administration said.

It also noted the tremor was the third to be reported in the Seoul metropolitan area since 1978.

The quake was felt in Seoul and nearby areas in Gyeonggi Province, prompting inquiry calls to fire and police stations.

"I felt my office building being shaken a bit. I instantly thought an earthquake had occurred," a 31-year-old man working in southern Seoul said.

A 54-year-old woman who runs a restaurant in Siheung, about 40 km southwest of Seoul, said she was startled by shaking windows and some noises.

Citizens in Goyang, north of the capital, also reported feeling tremors, according to the administration.
