(LEAD) S. Korea issues yellow dust advisory

SEOUL, March 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's state-run weather agency issued a nationwide yellow dust advisory on Saturday, advising residents of the capital Seoul and other parts of the country to avoid outdoor activities.

The National Meteorological Administration said the advisory was issued for Seoul and the central and western parts of the nation as of 6:00 p.m. as the heavy yellow dust storm, the strongest so far this year, has been spreading across the country.

The watchdog, in particular, raised its yellow dust alert level to a warning for Jeolla Province, the southwestern part of the country.

The weather agency said the yellow sandstorm, which originated from Mongolia is expected to affect South Korea until Sunday although the effect would wane.

The hazardous yellow dust usually sweeps South Korea in spring, caused by China's industrialization and deforestation.

The yellow storm carries doses of heavy metals, causing health problems.
