High school students spend more time at school, less time in bed

SEOUL, March 30 (Yonhap) -- High school students in South Korea spent more time at school but less time in bed last year than the other students at other levels, a report showed Tuesday, indicating they are faced with harsher daily life conditions amid fierce competition to advance to better universities.

According to the report by Statistics Korea, high school students spent on average 9 hours and 8 minutes at weekday classes last year. This is much longer than the 6 hours spent by middle-school students at school and 4 hours and 42 minutes for elementary students. College students spent less than 4 hours at class every day.

The figures showed that high-school students here are faced with stiffer competition as they try to enter better universities after graduation, regarded as a major determiner of their success in society, a statistics agency official said.

Confronted with such tight daily class schedules, high-school students spent 7 hours and 11 minutes in sleeping every day, the shortest amount of time compared with other students, the report showed.

Elementary school students spent nearly 9 hours sleeping while middle-school and college students slept around 8 hours every day, the report showed. College students slept a daily average of 7 hours and 48 minutes last year.

The statistics are part of a survey of South Koreans' lifestyle including how much they spend time in sleeping, working and engaging in leisure activities.

The survey is conducted every five years. The latest was conducted on a total of 21,000 people, the agency said.
