Cheong Wa Dae opens Facebook account
By Lee Chi-dong
SEOUL, Nov. 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said Wednesday it opened a Facebook account, another move aimed at improving communication with tech-savvy younger generations.

Cheong Wa Dae said it plans to use the Facebook service, www.facebook.com/Cheongwadae, as an "online hub" by providing all contents on its official Web site, www.president.go.kr and related blogs through the account.

In his first message on Facebook, President Lee Myung-bak left words of cheer for more than 710,000 students and others who will take the state college entrance exam on Thursday.

"We will always welcome your opinions and listen to them. We will immediately let you know important issues, and by directly communicating with netizens (Internet users), we will try to further narrow the gap between you and Cheong Wa Dae," online spokesman Lee Kil-ho said.

Facebook, which has more than 500 million members around the world, is the world's largest social networking service.

In June, Cheong Wa Dae joined the Twitter service, @BluehouseKorea, four months after opening an account on me2DAY, a local micro-blogging social networking service by NHN Corp. that can be accessed at http://me2day.net/theBlueHouse.
