(2nd LD) 16 dead as ventilation graft crashes in S. Korean concert
SEONGNAM, South Korea, Oct. 17 (Yonhap) -- Sixteen people were killed and eleven others were injured as a ventilation grill at a suburban outdoor theater collapsed during a pop concert, fire officials said Friday.
The accident took place at 5:53 p.m. at Pangyo Techno Valley, a multi-purpose complex for technology firms, in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, just southeast of Seoul. Some 700 people were attending the concert organized by the provincial government.
The victims, who fell from a 10-meter height, were assumed to be on top of the facility to get a better view of the concert where various South Korean musicians, including girl group 4Minute, were performing.
"Twelve people were killed at the scene, two others were killed while they were being rushed to the hospital. Others are assumed to have passed away while receiving medical treatment," said a fire official.
The injured have been rushed to four hospitals near the venue.
As of 8:30 p.m., two of the killed victims have been identified.
