Chinese aircraft carrier stages drills near Korean Peninsula
BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Yonhap) -- China's sole aircraft carrier recently conducted drills near the Korean Peninsula, according to the Chinese military newspaper on Friday.
Carrier-based J-15 fighter jets took off from the Chinese aircraft carrier and landed on Liaoning in waters near the Bohai Strait, adjacent to the Korean Peninsula, the military newspaper reported, without revealing the exact date of the drills.
The Chinese aircraft carrier, which was purchased from Ukraine, entered into service in 2012 after a refit.
China is rapidly building up its naval might at a time when tensions mount over its land reclamation works in the South China Sea.
China claims sovereignty over nearly 90 percent of the South China Sea, worsening relations with neighbors such as the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. Beijing is also in a bitter dispute with Tokyo over islets in the East China Sea.
