SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Yonhap) -- Eastar Jet, a South Korean low-cost carrier, said Thursday it will open a route to Miyazaki later this month in an aggressive push to lure customers.

It is the first time for a local budget carrier to open a route to Miyazaki, located on the Japanese island of Kyushu, though full-service carriers such as Korean Air Lines Co. offer flights to the southern prefecture, the company said in a statement.

With the opening of the route to Miyazaki on Dec. 21, Eastar Jet will be operating regular routes to eight Japanese cities by the end of this year. In January, it will add its ninth route -- to Oita, a city in the south of Japan -- to woo outbound travelers to Japan during peak winter season, a company spokeswoman said.

Eastar Jet now operates flights on 27 international routes that connect South Korea to eight countries -- Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia and the U.S. territory of Saipan.

The airline runs 18 airplanes, comprising two 213-seat B737-900s, 15 B737-800 jets with 189 seats, and one 149-seat B737-700 jet.
