SEOUL, Feb. 7 (Yonhap) -- Air Pohang Co., a regional airline, began operations Wednesday on two domestic routes, heralding expanded services for local travelers.

The new airline is based in the industrial city of Pohang, about 370 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and currently operates two Bombardier 50-seat CRJ-200 aircraft.

The company offers flights on the Pohang-Gimpo and the Pohang-Jeju Island routes. Jeju, located off the country's southern coast, is a popular tourist destination.

Asia's fourth-largest economy presently has two full-service carriers -- Korean Air Lines Co. and Asiana Airlines Inc. It also has six low cost airlines -- Jin Air, Jeju Air, Air Busan Co., Air Seoul Inc., Eastar Jet and T'way Air Co.

As the local airline industry has grown rapidly, fueled by budget airlines, Korean Air and Asiana are expected to focus on expanding their fleets with bigger planes and on increasing flights on profitable long-haul routes.
