SEOUL, March 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korea ranked 33rd among 44 countries in the global entrepreneurial spirit index this year, a survey showed Wednesday

The ranking represents a sharp drop from 23rd the previous year, according to the 2018 Amway Global Entrepreneurship Report (AGER) written by Amway after in-person and telephone interviews of 49,000 men and women aged between 14 and 99 last year.

The report gauges the key drivers behind the entrepreneurial spirit and the impact internal and external factors have on attitudes and perceptions about entrepreneurship.

The Amway Entrepreneurial Spirit Index (AESI) for South Korea fell to 39 this year from 48 last year.

The index measures three dimensions that influence a person's intention to start a business, including desire, feasibility and stability against social pressure.

The figure is well below the global average of 47 and the average for Asian countries that stands at 61.

Vietnam topped the list at 84, China came in third at 80, and Japan was in 42nd place at 25.

The report also showed only 54 percent of the South Korean youths surveyed said they will be able to get active support from family members or friends, although the comparable figures were 89 percent for Vietnam, 81 percent for India and China, and 70 percent for the average for Asian countries.
