SEOUL, April 6 (Yonhap) -- The presidential office Cheong Wa Dae expressed deep regret after a court found the ousted former leader, Park Geun-hye, guilty of corruption on Friday, and vowed not to forget what led to her demise so as not to make the same mistake.

"They say the history not remembered repeats itself. We will not forget today," Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said in a released statement.

The commentary came shortly after the Seoul Central District Court sentenced the former president to a 24-year prison term, along with an 18 billion won (US$16.84 million) fine, for abusing her power and accepting bribes while in office.

Park, 65, was removed from the top executive office by the Constitutional Court in March 2017 over the corruption allegations that have now led to her conviction.
