(3rd LD) Koreas open joint liaison office in Kaesong

SEOUL/KAESONG -- South and North Korea launched their joint liaison office on Friday, securing a platform for round-the-clock communication that is expected to help foster cross-border exchange and ease tensions.

The liaison office was launched in the North's border town of Kaesong, with around 50 people each from the two Koreas attending the opening ceremony.

The move is a follow-up on an agreement that the leaders of the two Koreas reached in their April summit to run such an office on hopes that the office will serve as a communication channel to help facilitate inter-Korean cooperation on various fronts.

South Korea launches 3,000-ton homegrown submarine

SEOUL -- South Korea held a launching ceremony Friday for a 3,000-ton indigenous submarine, a new strategic weapons system designed to bolster underwater defense capabilities.

The ceremony for the diesel-electric air-independent propulsion submarine, named after a prominent South Korean independence fighter, Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, took place at the Okpo Shipyard of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. on the southern island of Geoje.

The ceremony was attended by 350 people, including government and military officials and employees of the shipbuilder, the Navy said.

(LEAD) Hyundai heir apparent gets No. 2 post amid uncertainties

SEOUL -- Hyundai Motor Group, South Korea's biggest carmaker by sales, on Friday named the group's heir apparent as its chief vice chairman amid growing uncertainties in the global automobile market.

Chief Vice Chairman Chung Eui-sun, 49, will assist his father and the conglomerate's Chairman Chung Mong-koo, 81, in responding to the spread of protectionism in major trading partners, such as the United States and China, and tougher competition with rivals, the group said in a statement.

SsangYong Motor to rehire all fired workers by 2019

SEOUL -- SsangYong Motor Co. and its union have reached an agreement to rehire the remaining 119 workers who were fired amid the carmaker's restructuring efforts a decade ago, the company said Friday.

SsangYong Motor said in a statement that it will rehire 60 percent of the workers by the end of 2018 and the remaining 40 percent by the first half of 2019, with an aim to finish assigning duties to all those that are rejoining the company.

The maker of the Rexton and Tivoli SUVs has been mired in protracted disputes with those who left the company against their will in 2009 after it was placed under court receivership.

(LEAD) 23 Yemeni asylum seekers granted humanitarian stay permits

JEJU -- The immigration office on the southern island of Jeju decided Friday to give 23 Yemeni asylum seekers humanitarian stay permits in South Korea, although it rejected their applications for official refugee status.

The 23 were among hundreds of Yemenis who arrived on Jeju earlier this year and applied for asylum. The immigration office has been reviewing 484 applications for months and announced the results for 440 cases. None of them were granted official refugee status.

The 23 people were families with young children, those pregnant or injured.

Samsung working with Google on advanced messaging service

SEOUL -- South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. has said it is working with U.S. Internet giant Google Inc. to offer improved messaging experiences that would allow users to have group chats and video calls and transfer large files without the need for additional apps.

The collaboration will ensure that Android Messages and Samsung Messages will work together seamlessly, and it will boost coverage of Rich Communication Services (RCS), an upgrade to the SMS messaging system.

Hyundai hires ex-VW brand marketing expert

SEOUL -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's biggest carmaker by sales, said Friday it has hired a former Volkswagen brand marketing expert to enhance its corporate image.

Cornelia Schneider, 54, will join Hyundai Motor on Monday as vice president in charge of operations of the carmaker's global motor studios, the "space marketing" and preparations of various motor shows and other exhibitions, the company said in a statement.

In space marketing, she is expected to draw up strategies for showrooms and other places allocated for Hyundai vehicles, a spokesman said.
