(2nd LD) Lee vows to expand rail access to PyeongChang to boost Olympic bid
By Lee Chi-dong SEOUL, March 15 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak on Monday promised to support the construction of a new railway linking PyeongChang with nearby inland and coastal cities in Gangwon Province, seeking to give fresh momentum to the South Korean ski resort's bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The president ordered his government to speed up a multi-billion-dollar project to build a new railroad to link Gangwon's two major cities with PyeongChang, about 182 kilometers east of Seoul, according to the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae. But opposition parties immediately attacked Lee's remark, made during his visit to Chuncheon, the capital of Gangwon Province, as a political gift designed to influence the local elections slated for June 2.
