Cabinet approves revisions to controversial Sejong City plan
By Shim Sun-ah SEOUL, March 16 (Yonhap) -- The Cabinet on Tuesday approved a set of legal revisions that cancel a controversial plan to relocate key government offices out of Seoul, amid lingering political debate over the plan.
With the Cabinet approval, the government is expected to submit the revisions to the National Assembly by the end of this month. In 2005, the administration of then President Roh Moo-hyun decided to relocate nine ministries and four subsidiary agencies to Sejong City, which is now under construction in South Chungcheong Province, in phases from 2012 to 2030 to decentralize the capital area. His successor, current President Lee Myung-bak, has sought to reverse the plan, saying it would cause administrative inefficiency and waste taxpayer money.
