WASHINGTON, Aug. 25 (Yonhap) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will stay in Pyongyang for at least another day, apparently awaiting a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, who abruptly traveled to China as Carter arrived, an informed source said Thursday.
"I understand President Carter originally planned to stay in Pyongyang for two days, but has decided to extend the stay at least one more day," said the source, asking anonymity. "However, it is not clear at the moment whether the extended stay is for a meeting with Chairman Kim Jong-il."
Carter flew into Pyongyang Wednesday and was expected to leave the North Korean capital Thursday with Aijalon Gomes of Boston, who was sentenced in May to eight years in a labor and re-education camp and fined US$700,000 for illegal entry four months earlier.
