Home shopping firms' mobile sales soar last year
SEOUL, Feb. 6 (Yonhap) -- Sales of local home shopping companies through mobile devices rose sharply last year, but those in the Internet shopping sector lagged, industry data showed Thursday.
Sales of CJ O Shopping, formerly known as CJ Home Shopping, from mobile devices jumped more than four-fold to 305 billion won (US$283.5 million) in 2013 from a year ago, the company said. It predicted its mobile sales to more than double to reach 625.3 billion won this year.
By comparison, its sales via TV channels dropped 4.4 percent to 1.83 trillion won, and Internet sales fell 10.4 percent to 767.4 billion won.
Mobile shopping is generally preferred by young consumers in their 20s and 30s over TV home shopping.
GS Home Shopping Inc. saw its sales in the mobile division rise more than six-fold to 278.9 billion won last year from the previous year. The company expected the figure to advance 85 percent on-year to 516 billion won in 2014.
The firm posted 1.94 trillion won in sales in its TV shopping division last year, up 8.8 percent from a year ago, but its Internet sales fell 18.2 percent to 803.7 billion.
