S. Korean stem cell researcher to set up research center in Dubai

2016/02/22 21:40

SEOUL, Feb. 22 (Yonhap) -- Disgraced South Korean stem cell researcher Hwang Woo-suk is set to launch a bio-research center in Dubai this year, industry sources said Monday.

According to the sources, the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, led by Hwang, will open the institute there after March.

The planned launch of the bio-research institute is part of collaborative projects between Hwang and the United Arab of Emirates (UAE), the sources said.

Other details were not known, they said.

In articles published in the journal Science between 2004 and 2005, Hwang claimed to have succeeded at creating the world's first cloned human embryo, a breakthrough extolled by the nation and the scientific community.

Hwang, however, did not provide any verifiable data, and an internal probe by the nation's top university Seoul National University later discovered he had fabricated his results.

He was convicted of receiving state funds for faked research in 2009 and given a suspended prison term.
