TWICE retrieves No. 1 spot as broadcaster acknowledges data error

SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korean girl group TWICE won back the top slot of a major local music chart on Monday as national television terrestrial broadcaster KBS admitted to a data error in putting together the weekly compilation.

KBS' weekly music chart "Music Bank," one of the key gauges for measuring a K-pop band's popularity here, mixed up the top two spots for this month's last weekly chart.

Before correction, "Good Luck" by girl group AOA was dubbed No. 1 and "Cheer Up" by TWICE No. 2. After KBS corrected the data for the album sales, the two switched places.

"We detected some flaws in the album sales data," KBS said in a press release.

"There was an error while tallying the weekly album sales reported by Hanteo Chart, Shinnara Chart and Hottracks Chart."

The music show's production crew offered a public apology for the switch-up.

The correction came after some online critics voiced suspicions about the music chart results. Shortly after the music show was aired, they claimed that TWICE appeared to have sold more albums than AOA.

After KBS looked into the music chart data consisting of EP sales (65 percent), total appearance in broadcasters (20 percent), audience rating (10 percent) and album sales (5 percent), it concluded that the chart rankings were erroneous.

KBS' acknowledgment came as a rarity, since South Korean terrestrial broadcasters are often confronted by fans with compilation error accusations and yet seldom make actual changes.

Launched on June 16, 1998, KBS' "Music Bank" is aired every Friday at 5 p.m. to present new songs by popular K-pop artists.
