Seoul, Dec. 19 (Yonhap) -- Members of South Korean boy bands Shinee, BTS and ZE:A revealed their roles in the upcoming period drama "Hwarang" during a recent press conference to promote the series.

Popular idol singers Choi Min-ho; Kim Tae-hyung, or V; and Park Hyung-sik, along with Park Seo-joon, Do Ji-han, Jo Yoon-woo and the female lead Go Ara, held an exclusive event Friday in southern Seoul to introduce the roles they will be playing and answer drama-related questions from the audience.

The forthcoming series revolves around an elite group of young men called hwarang who discover their passions, love and friendship in the turmoil of the Silla Kingdom (57 B.C. - A.D. 935).

"Although it's clearly a historical drama, we aimed to create a historical drama that is also a fusion (of genres) that talks about youth and has a modern feel," the series' producer and director Yoon Sung-sik said at the event.

Park Seo-joon plays a young man of low birth who rises above his situation in life to become a legendary hwarang warrior and Go plays his counterpart, a woman with a cheerful and straightforward personality and good work ethic. Meanwhile, Park Hyung-sik will play the dark, sensitive and abrasive King Jinheung, who greatly enlarged the kingdom during his reign, and the other actors will take on the roles of other hwarang warriors, each with his own story.

"Hwarang" airs every Monday and Tuesday on KBS 2TV at 10 p.m.
