Samsung SDI unveils electric car battery with range of up to 600 kilometers
SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Yonhap) -- Samsung SDI Co., a battery maker of Samsung Group, has unveiled an electric car battery with a range of up to 600 kilometers on a single full charge, company officials said Monday.
The "high-energy battery cell," which can fast charge electric vehicles in 20 minutes, is on display at an annual auto show in Detroit, Samsung SDI said in a statement.
Samsung SDI plans to begin mass production of the new battery pack in 2021.
"With a 20 minute charge, you can have a driving range of up to 500 kilometers which is 80 percent of the capacity," Samsung SDI said.
"This means that only 20 minutes in the highway rest area will be enough for a battery to be charged, eliminating the range anxiety of EV (electric vehicle) drivers," it said.
Last year, Samsung SDI began construction of an electric car battery plant in Hungary to expand its capacity.
In the statement, Samsung SDI said the plant in Hungary "is to actively respond to the diverse requirements of global automakers by supplying the cutting-edge automotive batteries and LVS (low voltage system) solutions in the proximity."
Jeong Seh-woong, executive vice president of Samsung SDI, said, "By providing the industry-leading technologies and products that meet the demand of our customers and market, we will contribute to a rapid market adoption of EVs in North America and worldwide."
