N. Korean doctors favor mental clinics to make money

SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Yonhap) -- North Korean doctors favor psychiatric hospitals most, as they can make money from wealthy false patients who have committed crimes there, a U.S. broadcaster, monitored here, reported Monday.

"The hospitals where doctors can stably earn money in North Korea are No. 49 hospitals," Radio Free Asia (RFA) said, citing a source in the communist country's North Hamkyong Province. In the North, No. 49 hospitals are installed in every province and handle mental patients.

"Doctors are looking for mental hospitals where they can make money in a situation where the state's free medical system collapsed long time ago," the source said.

Most patients in No. 49 hospitals are rich drug users or lawbreakers who pretend to suffer from mental illness in order to avoid imprisonment, the source said.

"Rich people receive mental tests at No. 49 clinics first as a way to evade legal punishment. In this process, doctors take bribes," the source said.

Therefore, North Korean doctors are eager to find jobs at No. 49 hospitals by mobilizing all of their personal connections, the source added.
