SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Yonhap) -- North Korea and Russia recently agreed to extend an ongoing program providing North Korean students majoring in railways with a chance to study at a Russian university to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the railway sector, a U.S. broadcaster reported Tuesday.

"A delegation from Russian Railways (RZD) visited Pyongyang from Friday through Sunday to discuss ways to train North Korean railway elites," Radio Free Asia said, citing the Russian Embassy in the North Korean capital.

The two sides agreed to prolong the ongoing training program, the broadcaster said.

At present, 23 students from the Pyongyang College of Railways are reportedly studying at Far Eastern State Technical University in Khabarovsk.

In June, the North's railway minister visited Moscow to meet the RZD president for discussions on strengthening cooperation, according to the broadcaster.
