Injured figure skater pulls out of Asian Winter Games

Gangneung, South Korea, Feb. 17 (Yonhap) -- Former national figure skating champion Park So-youn pulled out of this month's Asian Winter Games Friday with an ankle injury.

Park, the 2015 South Korean women's singles champion, informed the Korean Skating Union (KSU) of her decision to withdraw from the continental competition, which opens Sunday in Sapporo.

According to a KSU official, the Sapporo organizing committee said it will make a decision on an alternate by Saturday.

Kim broke her left ankle in a fall during training in Seoul on Dec. 13 last year. She sat out ensuing competitions, including the ongoing International Skating Union (ISU) Four Continents Figure Skating Championships here in Gangneung, with hopes of being ready for Sapporo.

In Park's absence, South Korea may be able to send Choi Da-bin, who just missed out on an Asian Games berth at the national qualifying event last October.

Choi is skating at the Four Continents in Gangneung. She was the top South Korean in the short program Thursday, finishing in sixth with a personal best score of 61.62 points. The free skate is Saturday.

Should Choi be allowed to take Park's spot in Sapporo, the 17-year-old will only have had four days of rest before the women's short program in Sapporo next Thursday.

Another South Korean skater who qualified for the Asian Games, Kim Na-hyun, is dealing with right ankle and thigh pains. She skated through her injuries to finish 17th in the short program at the Four Continents, and said she won't give up on the free skate or the Asian Games.

South Korea has yet to win an Asian Games gold in figure skating.
