NEW YORK, Aug. 29 (Yonhap) -- U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the latest missile launch by North Korea Tuesday, saying it undermines regional security and stability.

North Korea fired what appeared to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan, sharply escalating tensions in the region.

"The Secretary-General condemns the latest launch of a ballistic missile by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in violation of Security Council resolutions," his spokesperson, Eri Kaneko, said in a statement. "The launch undermines regional security and stability and efforts to create space for dialogue."

Guterres also called on North Korea to "fully comply with its international obligations and work towards reopening communication channels."

Pyongyang is banned under multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions from testing ballistic missile technology.

The Security Council is set to convene an emergency meeting later in the day to discuss the latest provocation.
